How to Prepare for Government Job Exams: A Step-by-Step Plan

अपडेट · LKOJobs

Most government exams test the same four areas: reasoning, mathematics, English or Hindi, and general knowledge. If you prepare these properly once, you can sit several exams with small changes.

Step 1 — Read the official notice and syllabus

Download the notice from the official website (ssc.gov.in, ibps.in, rrbapply.gov.in, upsssc.gov.in, uppsc.up.nic.in). Note the eligibility, age limit, exam pattern, negative marking and syllabus. Do not rely on a coaching summary.

Step 2 — Solve previous years' papers first

Before buying books, attempt two or three old papers. You will see what is actually asked and where you stand. Many commissions publish old papers and answer keys on their websites.

Step 3 — Build the basics

  • Maths: NCERT Class 6–10, then topic practice — percentage, ratio, profit and loss, time and work, simple and compound interest, data interpretation.
  • Reasoning: series, coding-decoding, syllogism, puzzles, seating arrangement. Speed comes only from daily practice.
  • English / Hindi: grammar rules, vocabulary, comprehension. Read one newspaper editorial a day.
  • General knowledge: NCERT history, geography, polity and science for static GK; a monthly current affairs compilation; for UP exams, the history, geography, schemes and budget of Uttar Pradesh.

Step 4 — A daily timetable that works

TimeWhat to do
2 hoursMaths — one topic, then 30 questions
1.5 hoursReasoning practice
1 hourEnglish or Hindi
1 hourGK and current affairs
30 minutesRevise yesterday's mistakes

If you work, do three focused hours on weekdays and six on the weekly holiday. Regular study beats long study on a few days.

Step 5 — Mock tests

Start mock tests after about six weeks, one a week, then two or three a week in the last two months. The important part is the analysis: write down every wrong question and why it went wrong — concept, calculation or time.

Step 6 — Physical and typing tests

Police, defence and some railway posts have a physical test; start running early, not after the written result. Clerk and data-entry posts have a typing or computer test; practise 20 minutes daily.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How many hours should I study for a government exam?

Four to six focused hours a day for six to eight months is enough for most SSC, bank and railway exams if you study regularly and take mock tests.

Is coaching necessary?

No. Many candidates clear these exams with books, previous papers and online mock tests. Coaching helps mainly with discipline and doubt-solving.

Can I prepare for SSC and bank exams together?

Yes. Reasoning, maths and English are common. Banks ask more on banking awareness and puzzles; SSC asks more static general knowledge.
