Class 10 is the first point where you choose a direction. There is no single right answer. The right choice depends on what you enjoy, how your family is placed, and how soon you need to start earning.
Your five main options

Choosing a stream in Class 11
- Science (PCM): engineering, defence, architecture, computer science, pilot training.
- Science (PCB): medicine, nursing, pharmacy, paramedical courses, agriculture.
- Commerce: accounts, banking, CA, CS, B.Com, BBA, business.
- Arts / Humanities: civil services, teaching, law, journalism, design, social work.
Do not pick a stream only because friends chose it. Look at the subjects you scored well in and liked studying.
ITI and polytechnic
ITI trades such as Electrician, Fitter, Welder, COPA (computer operator), Mechanic and Stenographer lead to jobs in factories, railways, power companies and workshops, and to apprenticeships. Admission in Uttar Pradesh is through the state ITI admission portal run by the State Council for Vocational Training.
Polytechnic diplomas (Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Computer Science and others) are admitted through the UP joint entrance examination for polytechnics (JEECUP). A diploma holder can work as a junior engineer or join the second year of B.Tech.
Free skill training
The Uttar Pradesh Skill Development Mission and the central Skill India programmes run free short courses in retail, data entry, tailoring, beauty, electrician work, hospitality and more. Ask at your nearest training centre or district employment office.
Jobs open to 10th pass candidates
- Government: posts advertised for matriculates by the Staff Selection Commission (such as Multi-Tasking Staff), the Railways, India Post and the armed forces. Each has its own notice and age limit.
- Private: delivery, store helper, machine operator, security, housekeeping, driver, field sales.

If you had to leave school
The National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) lets you complete Class 10 and 12 while working. A 12th certificate opens many more jobs later.
