Scholarships for Students in Uttar Pradesh: Schemes and How to Apply

Updated · LKOJobs

Dates, fees, age limits and amounts change every year. Always read the latest official notice on the website named below before you apply.

A scholarship can pay your fees and part of your living costs. Most students in Uttar Pradesh apply through two government portals: the state's UP Scholarship portal and the central National Scholarship Portal.

1. UP Scholarship and Fee Reimbursement

Website: scholarship.up.gov.in

  • Pre-matric: for students of Class 9 and 10.
  • Post-matric (Intermediate): for Class 11 and 12.
  • Post-matric (other than Intermediate): for graduation, postgraduation, diploma, ITI and professional courses.

It is open to General, OBC, SC, ST and minority students whose family income is within the limit set for their category. The limit and the amount differ by category and course, so read the current guidelines on the portal.

How to apply

  1. Open the portal and choose Student → Registration for your category and class (fresh or renewal).
  2. Register with your Aadhaar number, mobile number and high school roll number. Note the registration number.
  3. Log in and fill personal, education, fee, bank, caste and income details. Income and caste certificate numbers are checked against e-District records.
  4. Upload your photograph and required documents.
  5. Check everything, then lock the form. It cannot be edited after locking.
  6. Print the form and submit it with documents to your school or college within the given days.
  7. Track the status on the portal using your registration number.

2. National Scholarship Portal (NSP)

Website: scholarships.gov.in

NSP carries central government schemes — for minority communities, students with disabilities, SC, ST and OBC students, top scorers in Class 12 going to college (the Central Sector Scheme), and schemes of AICTE and UGC.

How to apply

  1. Do the One-Time Registration (OTR) with your mobile number and Aadhaar. It is free.
  2. Complete face authentication through the NSP OTR mobile app. You will receive an OTR number by SMS; keep it safe, because it is used every year.
  3. Log in with the OTR number, open the application form and fill in your details. The portal shows the schemes you are eligible for.
  4. Upload documents and submit before the last date.
  5. Your institute verifies the application first, then the district or state, and the money is paid into your bank account.

Other scholarships worth checking

  • AICTE Pragati (girls) and Saksham (students with disabilities) for technical courses
  • INSPIRE scholarship for top Class 12 scorers studying basic sciences
  • PM YASASVI for OBC, EBC and DNT students
  • Scholarships from your own university, and from public sector companies and trusts

Documents you will need

  • Aadhaar card, and a bank account in the student's name that is linked to Aadhaar and enabled for direct benefit transfer
  • Income certificate and caste certificate issued by the Tehsil (through e-District)
  • Domicile certificate
  • Previous year's marksheet
  • Current year's fee receipt and admission proof
  • Passport-size photograph

Why applications get rejected

  • Bank account not linked to Aadhaar, or account closed or inactive
  • Name spelt differently on Aadhaar, marksheet and bank passbook
  • Old or invalid income certificate
  • Form locked online but the printout not submitted to the college
  • Applying for the same year on both portals for overlapping schemes
  • Missing the renewal each year

Applying is free. Do not pay anyone who promises to "get your scholarship approved".

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Who can apply for the UP Scholarship?

Students of Class 9 and above who live in Uttar Pradesh, study in a recognised institution and whose family income is within the limit set for their category can apply on scholarship.up.gov.in.

Is there any fee to apply for a scholarship?

No. Applying on the UP Scholarship portal and the National Scholarship Portal is free.

Can I apply on both the UP portal and the National Scholarship Portal?

You can register on both, but you normally cannot receive two government scholarships for the same course in the same year. Read the scheme rules before applying to both.

Why has my scholarship money not come?

The most common reasons are a bank account not linked to Aadhaar, a mismatch in name, or verification pending at the institute or district level. Check the status on the portal and ask your college scholarship office.
